New day: new duties

Today was the first day of my new job at The Oregonian. I've been tasked - for the next month - with editing the letters to the editor.

As a rule, I've never arrived at work before 11 a.m. Design shifts for features start at 11, other shifts start at 2 p.m. and as late as 4 p.m. Today was an early day. I was at work at 9 a.m.

Tomorrow - though I forgot to ask if we'd arrive at the same time - will be the same ordeal. A 7:30 a.m. wake up is a little early for my tastes, but soon enough I'll be adjusted to be able to handle it. However, a 7:30 a.m. wake up means that I'll be tucked into bed in another half hour. It's almost 9 p.m. now.

We got to work this morning by reading all of the letters that rolled in over the weekend. After sorting the letters in to categories, and eliminating letters that were too long, etc. we had a pile to work with. Now, "a pile" is figurative. Electronically, you have to be good at keeping track of what's coming in and what's going out. After sorting, editing and coding twenty or so letters, I was on my way.

Tomorrow, I fly solo on the daily project.

After getting off work at 5 p.m. (wow), I had a coffee date with Christina Holtom (Hey, Girls State!). My fingers are itching to do some design work, but I'll take a paycheck - especially at The Oregonian. I feel like if I do my job well, I can make a difference in somebody's life. I just want to feel useful. I don't want to be a cog. I think we get around being a cog in the corporate machine by being effective.

Here's to early bedtimes and being effective. Cheers.
